  • Increase public knowledge and understanding of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the urgent need for enhanced stewardship of antimicrobials;
  • Urge for sustained funding to support a collaborative global programme of AMR containment strategies and management of a shared global health resource; 
  • Call for the creation of an international treaty on antimicrobial resistance;
  • Campaign for urgent action to establish an integrated and strengthened supply chain for existing antibiotics with improved planning of appropriate reserves for national and global stocks to enable a rapid response for all countries if needed; 
  • Encourage substantial funding of international research to seek and formulate new antibiotics, develop rapid diagnostics and support the exploration of  alternative novel therapeutics;
  • Support and promote the multi-faceted ONE HEALTH strategy to attain optimal health for people, animals and environment;
  • Campaign to stop the overuse of antimicrobials by veterinary and agricultural professionals and corporations;
  • Call for global legislation to require pharmaceutical companies and drug manufacturers to undertake mandatory environmental risk assessments to reduce environmental risk of increasing antimicrobial resistance;
  • Campaign for deaths linked to a failure of antibiotic therapy (antimicrobial resistance) to be officially registered as a contributing cause of death; 
  • Act as a forum to: 
    • disseminate research findings and encourage robust policy development with active partnerships at global, regional, national and local levels;
    • support global, regional and national initiatives of the United Nations, World Health Organisation, (WHO), Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Centers for Disease Control (Atlanta), Department of Health (UK) and other stakeholder organisations;
    • promote and engage in the annual World Antibiotic Awareness Week, European Antibiotic Awareness Week, 12-18 November, European Antibiotic Awareness Day-18 November, World Hand-washing Day-5 May and other public health initiatives;

Penicillin heralded the dawn of the antibiotic age - due to overuse and misuse we are approaching a post-antibiotic age.
